Two Happy Boys...One Lonely Mother

For Brody's April vacation, Brody, Ryan, and Jan went to see Uncle Pat and Auntie Ev in Charlotte while I stayed home to work and enjoy some alone time.  They left on Wednesday morning and when I got home from work on Wednesday afternoon I was like a teenager whose parents had left for the weekend.  I played loud music, I made something with very little nutritional value for dinner and ate it in front of the TV, I stayed up late.  It was great.  In the morning I woke up and took my time getting ready for work...only having to get myself out the door, I got to work early...fabulous!  Then Thursday afternoon came...and I headed home from work..and it wasn't so bad at first.  I said hello to the cat, sat on the back porch and listened to the birds, thought about making something more nutritious for dinner...and then it happened, I was hit with an overwhelming, awful feeling...I MISSED MY FAMILY!  Alone time, shmalone time, I wanted my boys back.

Needless to say, the next 4 days without them were not nearly as enjoyable as I had imagined.  I had pictured going to yoga every day, cooking fabulous things for dinner every night, taking long luxurious baths, sleeping like a baby, and feeling rejuvinated.  Instead, I realized that I will take my busy, often chaotic, life WITH my boys over alone time any day...and yes, you can remind me of that when I complain that I never have any time to myself!

They, on the other hand, had a blast.  Brody just adores his Uncle Pat and apparently even became a fan of Sydney, their dog.  Thankfully, their trip came to an end and we were all reunited on Monday.  I have never been so happy for Monday to get here or to put a cranky two and a half year old to bed!

Here are a few pictures from their trip...

Brody apparently had to pull his own suitcase through the airport...and he became a big fan of the moving sidewalks and escalators!

A visit to the Charlotte Nature Museum...and yes, Brody in a pint-sized apron melts my heart!

The cutest bug in Charlotte!

Peak-a-boo!

Pretending to be a T-rex in Sydney's crate...we might have to consider purchasing one of these for home!

Ahhh...Tea!

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I enjoy tea.  Tea is not simply a beverage...it is a way of life...it is a warm cup of delicious, soul-soothing comfort.  Tea is bliss!  And so, you must imagine my disappointment of never finding a man who shares this joy of tea...not even my as-close-to-perfect-as-anyone-can-be husband shares my love for tea.  He respects it and gladly makes me a cup, but does not partake.  And so, having never met a man who shares my affinity for the tea leaf...I have decided to create one.

Here is Brody's first experience with green tea...and hopefully the beginning of a beautiful mother-son ritual of morning tea and stimulating conversation!

The first sip...you never can tell with this picky eater!

It looks promising as he goes for another sip...

It's good!  He likes it...and I have realized there is nothing else I would rather do in the world than have a cup of tea with my boy!

And now he is mastering the art of bobbing the tea to encourage steeping.

Now we're engaged in highly intellectual conversation - a mother's dream!

He's so excited about the tea that he can't even contain himself - now I know he is my child because I have the same feelings with every cup I drink!

But alas...all good things must come to an end.  It's time to head to school!

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...

Here are some pictures of Easter at the McCarthy house!

Looking for his Easter basket...not in "Uncle Pat's" closet.

Not in Brody's closet...

Not under our Brody's bed...

Not under our bed...

FINALLY!

Checking out the goodies

On to the egg hunt!

The Easter Bunny brought lots of little dinosaurs.  Of course we had to immediately match them up!

The dinosaur village!

We spent the rest of the morning...and most of the afternoon playing in the one remaining dirt pile in the yard!

Ladies and Gentleman...

...boys and girls I present to you...Miss Annabelle!  Yes, that's right.  Our beautiful, talented niece, Annabelle, was the lead in her first grade musical called Rumpus in the Rainforest.  It was the most entertaining and well done chidlren's musical I have ever seen!

Little Monkey

Just some pictures of Brody in his new monkey hat.  Apparently it was a Christmas gift from his Auntie Laura that got lost in the hustle and bustle of the holidays...so thankfully we had some cold days in March and April for him to wear it!  He wanted me to capture - in photos - his many monkey moments.  Here they are...

Brody & The Fishies

Since Brody could walk I've wanted to take him to the New England Aquarium.  I remembered the enormous tank in the middle of the room and spending what seemed like hours walking up the ramp that spiraled around it.  I remembered seemingly hundreds of exhibits and being able to pick up starfish and crabs.  I could have spent days there...well I think the place shrunk.  Brody was amazed with all the fish and the penguins and sharks and rays, but after an hour and a half Ryan and I looked at each other and said, "Didn't there used to be more to this place?"  Apparently not.  We still had a great time, but we were shocked by how small it seemed now that we're adults.  Here are a few pictures of our trip...mostly shots that Brody asked me to take of the purple starfish and the blue lobster!

And we finally found Marlin and Dori!...this was after much debate on whether it was Marlin or Nemo - Brody finally decided it was Nemo's daddy!

Now what?

So we're all moved and settled in our new home. It is amazing. And I am thankful every day for having had the opportunity to build our own home. Everything, down to the very last nook and knob turned out exactly how I had hoped.  It is so satisfying to be living inside something that started as a thought inside our over-ambitious heads! I am very lucky to have married such a fabulous carpenter!

I realized when we finished the house and I stopped updating this blog (and several people told me they missed the updates), that I actually missed posting updates.  So...I'm back.  Not that I'm very interesting or that our crazy life is anything more spectacular than anyone elses crazy life, but it's at least a place for people to see what we're up to and hear some of the thoughts that live in my scattered mind!

So when we first moved into the house and got settled, I looked around and said to myself "Now what?" Somehow I thought when the house was finished and we were no longer pre-occupied with installing floors, painting window trim, tracking invoices, dealing with the bank, and all the other details of building a house, that we would find ourselves with all this free time on our hands. I imagined lazy afternoons playing in the yard. I imagined weekends full of exploring the hiking trails down the road and getting our kayaks back in the water; afternoons strolling Main Street and trips to the Children's Museum and the Aquarium. I imagined frequent yoga classes and finding my inner zen-ness. I imagined getting to work on time, no, getting there early, and being amazingly productive now that my head was clear of all this house-building nonsense. I imagined delectible aromas coming from my new kitchen because, with so much time on my hands, I would become a gourmet cook and perfectly prepare all of the recipes I have ever clipped, becoming the envy of my neighbors for both my domestic skills and my career and the way I so gracefully and effortlessly balance home life and working full time. Um...SOOO not the case. Just because we finished the house doesn't mean I stepped into a fairy tale.  Life is still like trying to catch a speeding train.

This speeding train is due in part to the fact that we haven't settled into a routine yet. I thank the various flu viruses and other germs that have taken up temporary residence with us for this lack of routine. When we forwarded our mail I'm pretty sure we specified the names of the people to be residing there.  We did not list, for example...two week hacking cough cold/flu, nasty stomach bug, febrile siezure bastard, nor sinus cold turned ear infection turned ruptured membrane.  Yet, all of these characters have been unwelcomed guests in our house, and in our poor little Brody, since moving to the new house.

The speeding train is also due in part to my new friend, insomnia. She is more of a stalker than a friend actually.  She thinks I should fear new fever-inducing viruses breaking into the house and that I should worry the night away that Brody will have another seizure.  So she keeps me up listening for any sign of distress coming from Brody's room.  Of course, after being up all night with her, it's impossible to get out of bed in the morning...thus making us all late and hindering the creation of that much needed routine. I hear that spring is just around the corner, although you never can tell in New England, and those germs will take a vacation and hopefully I can get some rest.

Despite the germs and the lack of sleep, life is very good.  We have been able to enjoy the sunshine (where did that go anyway?) on our front porch and play in the yard until dinner time.  I have had plenty of time to cook...although not the gourmet meals in my dreams.  Brody's has turned into a muffin junky and so I bake muffins every week to support his habit.  We did find the time to make a trip to the aquarium last weekend.  Ummm...was it always that small?  We also were able to make a trip to the hospital to meet the newest members of the McCarthy family - little Matthew and Meghan McCarthy - the cutest (and largest) newborn twins I have ever seen!

So life is good...and we are grateful for everything in it...and I promise there will be fewer words from me and more pictures in later posts!
